With the release of another of his novels to the big screen, I thought I’d recommend Ian McEwan’s The Children Act to read before you go and see the film starring Emma Thompson and Stanley Tucci.
True to McEwan’s style of short, intense and utterly gripping stories following a complex and controversial subject matter, The Children Act is no different. Fiona Maye is a high court judge plagued with a monumental decision to make. A 17 year old boy desperately needs a blood transfusion to stay alive but his parents and their religion forbid such a medical procedure. It is down to Maye to decide the fate of the child.
As ever, McEwan entwines the main events with the personal strife and experience of the protagonist making Maye’s decision all the more complicated.
This is a great novel, a must read especially before seeing the film. ❤️📚
