West With Giraffes was one of the most delightful books we have recently read. It is based on the true story of how two Giraffes were transported all across the USA in 1938.
We both had a singular thought while reading it – giraffes are such fascinating creatures! Most of us have probably seen them at least once, but I don’t think we ever stopped and thought about how charmingly weird they genuinely are! A special connection between a human and an animal makes this story one of the most heartwarming and heartbreaking stories we read in a long time.
The author does an excellent job of bringing the reader to the difficult days of the late 1930’s America. You can feel that country had seemingly lost hope, caught in the Great Depression, Dust Bowl and the rise of Nazis in Germany. But this is where the story starts to shine – it has a charming, positive spin to it, like a filter that saturates the bright colours on the picture. Let’s be honest – who wouldn’t smile at two giant heads sticking from the top of an old truck, happily trotting through nowhere?
The ending was not the typical “happily ever after”, but it fit the story well and was very real. We recommend this to everyone who enjoys historical fictions and/or is an animal lover.
