This is a brilliant book by Tim Marshall – well worth a read especially given the current changes to our geographical and political world.
Prisoners of Geography explores ten maps showing the absolute power of the physical features that a country has on its nation. Marshall explains how the pure simplicity of having or not having navigable rivers or natural harbours or warm water ports or mountain ranges or coastlines effects the economy, politics and progress of a country or group of countries. He cleverly combines the history of each place with its geography to express the significance of such features particularly when tampered with by human intervention, namely the drawing of arbitrary borders.
This book is filled with remarkable insights into the modern countries of our world 🌍, providing an intelligent, thoughtful and utterly fascinating investigation of how geography keeps so many of us prisoner ❤️📚
