This book is a test of endurance, emotional strength and resilience. Never before have I been more physically and mentally effected and consumed by a novel. Hanya Yanagihara is a magician who has created a masterpiece.
It is an epic of Homeric proportions at over 700 pages, intimidating for even the most avid reader, but it is not just its length, it is the intensity of every single one of those pages that makes it such a mammoth undertaking. It is far from being a light read or a cheery choice for a holiday. No no, A Little Life is a harrowing, raw and exceptional tale of friendship, love and loyalty. Not for the faint-hearted nor the super busy: it will take over your life. The characters occupy your every thought and appear in your dreams, so incredible is the creation of the protagonists JB, Malcolm, Willem and, the most though provoking, Jude.
It starts with these four young men in college and follows their lives for thirty years as they intertwine and grow apart, fall in and out of love, grow up, become successful and learn their place in the world. As their stories unfold, we learn about their lives before they met each other and formed a never ending bond. Jude is the character we learn the most about, the character who has the most terrible history that takes over his present in alarming and frequent ways.
This is, most definitely, a recommendation, however, it comes with some trepidation because of the emotional onslaught it brings – you have been warned! 📚❤️ @hanyayanagihara @picadorbooks
