The world felt a little bit too much today so I baked a cake…

📖 A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote (Penguin Classics) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
‘Scented acres of holiday trees, prickly-leafed holly. Red berries shiny as Chinese bells… We set about choosing a tree. “It should be”, muses my friend, “twice as tall as a boy. So a boy can’t steal the star.”’ 🎄
A lovely little book of short stories from Truman Capote. The first couple of stories are definitely the most festive but the writing is brilliant (and often quite moving) the whole way through, characterised by seamlessly flowing dialogue and the use of Southern dialect.
Each tale happens to be the perfect length to read in a sitting each if you don’t have much time to read or want something you can pick back up easily. My favourite two stories had to be The Christmas Memory which tells the bittersweet story of a Christmas tradition shared between two friends, and Jug of Silver, which tells the tale of a small town’s take on the classic ‘guess the pennies in the jar’ game.
Anyone else been doing any reading/baking to keep distracted from all the news lately? Thinking of anyone who has had to change plans last minute and hope everyone is staying safe 💕
