The perfect summer holiday read, I finished it in one sitting.
Leïla Slimani’s novel Lullaby (translated into English by Sam Taylor) is a novel about a nanny who murders the children she looks after. Although it’s not really about that, or rather, it’s not just about that. You find this out in the first two pages and the rest of the novel tells the tale of how Louise, the seemingly perfect Mary Poppins style child minder, unravels resulting in her murderous act.
The book brilliantly explores the relationships between children and their parents. Slimani writes particularly insightfully about Myriam, the mother, and the pain, guilt and anguish she feels at going back to work and leaving her children with a nanny versus the lack of guilt felt by her husband Paul.
Recommended by @dollyalderton and @pandorasykes on where they interview Slimani (well worth a listen) and so I recommend it to you – a really great read ❤️📚 @leilaslimanette
