The Nightingale is a novel set in occupied France during the Second World War. However, it is not like so many WW2 novels that follow the stories of soldiers and the horrors they experienced, this book narrates the story of two sisters who, left behind by the men they love, do what they can for the war effort. The two women show heroic acts of bravery in their resistance of the Nazis who have occupied their beloved country, striving to keep those that they love alive but not able to sit by and do nothing.
Kristin Hannah’s novel is hugely emotional leaving me 😭 at the end. Vianne and Isabelle, the protagonists, have been carefully and thoughtfully created by Hannah, who’s ability to bring her characters to life is second to none. Within her page-turning scenes are stunning descriptions of France and totally absorbing plot lines who’s characters make the story utterly brilliant. I couldn’t recommend it more with a huge shout out to @ionaw123 for sending it my way ❤️📚 @kristinhannahauthor @panmacmillan
