The first in her WW1 trilogy, Regeneration by Pat Barker is a masterpiece and since it is 100 years since the Armistice was signed it is an apt recommendation.
The novel follows Siegfried Sassoon who’s poem sent to London from the front is deemed too controversial and not for public consumption resulting in his being sent to a war hospital in Edinburgh. It is here that he meets Dr Rivers and Wilfred Owen. Despite these individuals being historically accurate, the book is fiction and describes theirs and the other patients post-war experiences.
Barker uses first hand accounts from family members and other war veterans to inspire her sensational exploration of the trauma, both physical and psychological, that so many soldiers suffered from during and post the devastating war that’s end we celebrate today. ❤️📚
