The debut from poet Ocean Vuong is lyrical and sublime: he doesn’t waste a single word making every sentence count – packing a punch or pulling a heart string or tugging a thread that causes your brain to question, relate and even unravel leaving you marvelling at this author’s remarkable talent with words.
On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a young man to his mother admitting his thoughts, feelings and actions he is never able to say in reality. He relives memories of their life in a poor town in America where immigrants are not welcome, he retells the memories of his grandmother in Vietnam during the war and then in the US struggling to find her place and he reveals his teenage explorations.
Vuong’s characters show the poor, drug-riddled underside of American cities that imprison the poor and the hurt and the unwanted, narrated by a son who’s life is made up of his sexuality, his race and his fractious upbringing written in a beautiful letter that he knows will never be read. ❤️📚 @ocean_vuong @penguinukbooks
