“That One Patient: Doctors and Nurses’ Stories of the Patients Who Changed Their Lives Forever” is not only a book with one of the longest titles I have ever seen but also a very inspirational collection of memories and life-changing experiences.
We sometimes forget that doctors and nurses are people just like everyone else; these short stories bring them to life, exposing their real feelings, sentiments and reactions to the patients they see. This is a very touching read, as we look past the professionalism to a deep, personal level connection.
This is the book that made me somewhat sad. And not because many stories end up well, there are still many painful good-byes, but because I’m yet to meet a doctor who would be so devoted and inspirational. One thing I know – from now on, I will be a lot more compassionate while talking to a real-life doctor or nurse.
That One Patient is brimming with unforgettable stories of relationships all around us. All of them remind us of how extraordinary humans can be and our incredible capacity for courage, energy and humour. Would recommend to anyone looking for a tiny bit of hope in the everyday world.
