With our favourite pub bustling with people again, we are sitting down to talk about “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett.
Brit’s writing is beautiful; her characters are deep and complex. The book spans four decades and is told from the perspectives of two twin women and their daughters. They all took very different paths but still experienced love, loss, and heartbreak. The book beautifully presents and deals with race, gender, and self-identity.
One pint of citrusy IPA down🍻, the latter raised a superb point on our discussion: Have you ever taken on or discarded aspects of your own identity? And it turns out – we did. We both been living and working in a foreign country for almost a decade now. And we were baffled after realising how close we came to Stella’s experiences while trying to blend in the society you may not truly belong.
Overall it is one of the best books we have read and talked about in infamous year 2020.
5⭐ from both of us.
