QOTD: would you rather be a good or evil witch? 🧙🌿🔮
The Once and Future Witches is a book about women who are determined to wrest power back from the people and the institutions that have oppressed them for far too long. Together, the sisters Bella, Agnes, June and their friends must find “the will, the words, and the way.”
Set in 1893 in New Salem, the story begins when the three Eastwood sisters reunite after many years of separation. All of them have already been through hell in some way or another, and it’s not exactly a happy reunion—especially when it involves an accidental public display of witchcraft that sets the city aflame with fear.
We have found this incredible tale to be a truly inspiring read. It is a story of the resurrection of female witchcraft mixed with the movement of suffragists.
The writing was impeccable, and the story just great—even all the little details of spells and fairytales woven at the beginning of each chapter. We absolutely adored all three sisters, each one of them with their flaws and strengths. The world-building was fantastic, and all the other characters were incredibly well developed and beautifully introduced. On top of that book portrays the ever-important issues of racism and sexual orientation discrimination at the time.
This book is a lyrically written love letter to the sisterhood that brings witchcraft and feminism alive in the world of oppression.
