QOTD: what book never reaches the top of your TBR? 📖📚💕
The Mothers is a book about how one mistake can have repercussions for the rest of your life.
The Mothers starts with omnipresent voices telling a big secret which becomes the central theme of the book. The secret is that seventeen-year-old Nadia Turner got pregnant by Luke Sheppard – local pastor’s son, and had an abortion.
We initially picked The Mothers up last summer after loving The Vanishing Half and wanted to read more by author Brit Bennett. However, with our ever-growing reading list, it took that long to finally come to it!
For us, this was an honest story about decisions and consequences and how they can affect ourselves and our loved ones. The Mothers are the older group of church women who see all, hear all, know all and speculate and tell the story. Nadia and Luke’s story is complicated, painful and riddled with the secret that will be with them forever. The author does a wonderful job with the various points of view, especially with The Mothers thoughts and opinions.
We have fully embraced Nadia as she is left with the aftermath of her Mother’s suicide, feeling exposed and alone, and with a Father who refuses to talk to her about what has happened. She had no one to turn to but to Luke for comfort.
This book has something unique. We cannot quite put our finger on it, but there is something special and peculiar about it. The writing, the way story is told, and the relatable characters make this a very compelling read.

4 stars out of 5 from both of us 🧔👩🏻‍🦰

  1. I loved this one! I’ve had Shuggie Bain and Transcendent Kingdom on my TBR for a little too long

  2. I let this one sit for a long time too! Not until after I read the Vanishing Half did I read it. Really good!

  3. There’s so many books I have that never reach the top of my tbr! I think Me Before You is one I’ve had for ages and really want to read but never have!

  4. I loved this book, the narrators being the church ladies is something very unique. I want to read “The Vanishing Half” as well.

  5. I liked this book a lot. Somehow even more than The Vanishing Half. I guess the story resonated more with me…

  6. Oh gosh I’ve had a few that never seemed to get there! Recently though I’ve had my sister pick my next book off my shelf so that’s helped clear some that have been there for a while!

  7. This book sounds good! I have had a physical copy of Fight Club in my TBR longer then the rest and somehow I have never gotten to it despite how small it seems
