QOTD: do you like playing video games? 🎮🕹️
Ready Player Two is a sequel to the book called Ready Player One. It is a science fiction novel set in the dystopian year of 2045, where most people spend their entire lives in the virtual world called Oasis.
It has been a while since I listened to the audiobook. The later has been a daily part of my commute to an office every day, but with train journeys completely ripped off from my life lately, it seems I can’t fit listening into my life anymore. So why I picked this one up? Mainly it was for the voice of Wil Wheaton – in my opinion, one of the best voice actors for sci-fi novels ever.
I won’t talk about the plot, because the second book starts straight after the ending of the first one and there is A LOT to explain. The whole series is a geeky tribute to the 80s pop culture. Obscure references, facts and little known details will keep your inner nerd satisfied for days. However, me being 90s kid had a bit tougher luck – I was familiar with most of the cultural topics but did not feel nostalgia for all of them.
If I had to compare the first and second parts, I would say they stack up pretty much the same. First, one has a more epic main story, while in the second book, characters explore a lot deeper meaning of life in the virtual world, existential crisis and future of humanity as a species.
Overall it was a delightful experience. I was thrilled to go back and follow up on a life of the main characters from the first book. It is a decent sequel; however, make sure to read the first book before.
