My half term reading this week has been Sally Rooney’s second novel Normal People and it’s very good. It took me a while to digest as the characters are in one way so complex and yet in another so utterly relatable making me fully understand why this book has received so much hype.
Normal People follows the lives of Marianne and Connell who’s story begins in their final year of school where they start up a relationship that is secret and exhilarating as well as confusing and tumultuous.
They go to the same university and their fractured relationship continues told by Rooney in dates chapters that move on quickly but thread back in time ensuring the dots are joined just enough.
Connell and Marianne are complex and tortured in their own ways – Marianne’s low self-esteem and masochistic tendencies alongside Connell’s emotional immaturity – making their love for one another all the more turbulent. They can’t be apart but can’t be together and can’t work out how to work it out. Frustrating, thought-provoking and intriguing Rooney’s novel is a page turner full of emotion and beautiful language – the perfect jump back into fiction for me after weeks of memoirs! ❤️📚
