Miss Benson’s Beetle 🪲 is a sweet and wonderful book about two women who find an unlikely, beautiful friendship.
🪲
Margery, the central character, is an unmarried, unhappy teacher in her late 40s. She decides to ultimately pursue her dream of becoming an entomologist and seek a golden beetle her dad told her about as a girl, rumoured to exist off the coast of Australia. Margery meticulously plans her voyage and seeks an associate for her journey to the other side of the globe. She eventually ends up with Enid, a quirky, bold woman in her twenties. Unitedly, they begin the adventure of a lifetime!

It’s a beautiful depiction of an improbable friendship. That was what we enjoyed the most, the connection between Margery and Enid, how they grow to know and understand each other. We also agreed that Enid isn’t particularly likeable initially, but you find that you admire her quite fiercely by the end of the book. We loved the idea of the life goal, and the journey to the end of the world to discover some beetles felt mysterious and fascinating.

We fell in love with the whimsey tone, which ran the delicate balance of intelligent humour and deep human pain. The characters were wonderfully drawn, and the pace was fast and vivid. This could be easily made into a movie or TV show!

If you love quirky and unique stories with superb writing and wacky adventures, you might need to put this on your TBR. It does have some moving and tragic parts as well!
