Lockdown 2 has seen the return of gloom and doom as we are confined to our houses but with the added misery that the sun too is locking down much earlier.
So if you are in need of a pick me up and a change in culture, look no further than Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman.
Keiko has worked at the same convenience store for 18 years. She has never been promoted, never married, never had children and lives alone. All of which is deemed deeply bizarre to her friends and family. However, she is totally enamoured by the convenience store and worships the employees manual which gives her purpose and a greater sense of self than marrying.
Exceptionally quirky and perpetually up beat, this book is brilliant in its story and in its careful observations of societal norms. A must read ❤️📚
