Last weekend of lockdown 2.0 = perfect time to start a book and Homegoing is one of my favourites from this year so should go to the top of your list.
Chosen by @sarah__bury, Homegoing is a stunning piece of historical fiction following the stories of two sisters who never meet and who’s descendants live incredible, harrowing and, in some cases, heroic lives. One sister marries a slave trader while the other is captured into slavery and sold across the Atlantic. Two strands of fascinating black history are unwound. One goes through plantations to mines to Harlem to some semblance of freedom while the other stays in West Africa showcasing tribal mores and the history of colonisation.
Utterly compelling and brilliantly clever, Gyasi’s characters are enchanting and convincing making the reader devastated at the end of each chapter only to fall in love with the next generation in the next.
A must read from an author I’m eager to read more of ❤️📚
