I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is the first in Maya Angelou’s series of seven that make up her autobiography.
Angelou was an activist, professor, poet and author who fought for civil rights in America alongside Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. She is award-winning, ground-breaking and trail-blazing and reading her life story, you can see why.
She starts with her life in Stamps, Arkansas where life is rural, poor and almost entirely Black. She and her brother live with their grandmother until her father comes to pick them up and take them back to their mother. Following a traumatic event with their stepfather, Maya and Bailey are taken back to Arkansas. As teenagers they are once again moved to California where their adventures get more adult but the significance of their race prevails.
Beautifully written, IKWTCBS tells Angelou’s life but also that of the black lives in a post Jim Crow era. The racial prejudice and discrimination is rife, embedded and unwavering in the South. There are some contrasts in the West and Angelou is one of those people that helps to make the change. I can’t wait to read the next 6! ❤️📚 @viragopress
