I bought this after listening to podcast with @elizabday last summer and have only just got round to reading it, wish I hadn’t waited so long!
The Party is a book about belonging, outsiders and the baffling social mores of the British class system.
Irksome and often unlikeable, Martin Gilmour, Day’s pitiable protagonist, tells his story of what happened at the party interspersed with flashbacks of his life leading up to the present. His tale stars Ben Fitzmaurice, a member of the aristocracy, seemingly flawless with buckets of charm, who is Martin’s best friend from school and within who’s family Martin desperately tries to be a part of, despite being painfully and perpetually on the outside.
Day complements Martin’s side of the events with the view of his wife, Lucy, who has the clarity and perspective that Martin lacks. Her testimony shows Martin’s pathetic and heart breaking attempts to ingratiate himself into the Fitzmaurice world adding to the drama, emotions and suspense of the book.
Beginning in a police station, our attention is immediately piqued and it takes only a few pages to want to read on until the last. The perfect read for the summer ❤️📚
Thanks to @dollyalderton and @pandorasykes for the introduction
