‘Educated’ is Tara Westover’s incredible memoir. At only 32, this woman has achieved an impressive and intimidating amount especially given the hand she was dealt as a child growing up in the face of constant adversity.
Her memoir tells the story of her life in beautiful prose, her words are addictive, powerful and moving making this book un-putdownable!
She describes her life growing up in a family of devout Mormons the leader of which is a radical and volatile man. This man is her father. He is the reason she didn’t get a birth certificate until she was nine, he is the reason she never went to school or went to hospital and throughout Westover focuses on her torment between obeying, respecting and loving her maniacal father and rebelling against him in her quest for education.
In addition to her relationship with her father, those with her mother, grandparents and other siblings are explored and described, and are just as fascinating, fraught and turbulent. The relationship with one brother is particularly harrowing and heart wrenching as his violence and manipulation destroys her from the inside out.
This is a thought-provoking, emotional and inspirational book – the perfect antidote to a dreary January evening! Thank you to @alexandra_mayfield and @pandorasykes for the recommendation.
