Book club’s book this month was An American Marriage by Tayari Jones, winner of the Women’s Prize for fiction and one of the best books from last year.
Jones tells the fictional story of Roy and Celestial, a young couple who’s lives are turned upside down when Roy is accused, charged and sentenced to 12 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Their marriage is tested beyond all limits by Roy’s incarceration and we see the strain via letters between the two that Jones orchestrates beautifully.
The narrative is split between Roy, Celestial and their friend Andre showing different perspectives on the events of the eponymous marriage.
Jones writes with a great skill that left us with much to discuss this evening from whether or not the title is in fact referring to Roy and Celestial or is it either or both of their parents who play a pivotal role in the young lovers’ stories; to the issue of institutional racism embedded in America.
A brilliant book and a must read ❤️📚 shout out to @or_anderson for recommending and @oliviac_h @alicematildah @sarah__bury and @gjranson for such an enriching and thought provoking discussion and to @lucindac63 for buying me a copy for my birthday 🙏 @tayari @algonquinbooks
