@or_anderson’s book club choice this month proved to be our most voracious discussion yet.
Expectation is set in London in the early 21st century and follows three women in their early to mid thirties. Hope depicts the lives of best friends, Lissa, Hannah and Cate, through a series of flash backs and current chapters. Lissa is a struggling actress who’s yet to ‘settle down’, Hannah is successful, happily married and going through her third round of IVF and Cate has moved to Kent with her new born and just as new husband.
As the title suggests, this book is about expectation and what happens when the unexpected does. It is honest and powerful in its honesty, making some stories uncomfortable and heart-breaking. The characters are rich, relatable and compelling for the most part. Hope paints London in the most favourable light as her characters struggle in its company.
