Book club book this month was If I Had Your Face by @franceschawrites.
This debut novel tells the story of four women in South Korea trying to find their way in a culture geared towards beauty and perfection. Ara is a mute hairdresser traumatised by a previous experience; Miho is a rare, natural beauty who wins an art scholarship to New York where she finds herself in the insane world of the mega rich; Kyuri is in a frightening amount of debt that she accrued to change her face in order to work in the infamous room salons and Wonna, the oldest of the four, is pregnant and miserable at the life she has found herself in.
All four women have had difficult upbringings and are trying to find their way. A fantastic interpretation of twenty somethings in a city I know nothing about absorbing a culture I also knew nothing about. Cha captures the zeitgeist and takes the reader into the traditional, sexist and competitive world of Seoul. Beautifully written with rich and enticing characters, this is a great read and the perfect Christmas present. ❤️📚
