Biography is not the genre I read a lot of, but memoirs of the prison doctor took my attention this time. There is something about the dark, cold and violent places that always kept my interest. Being generally curious and following a lot of documentaries about various institutions of incarcerations of I had to pick this one up.

There is not a lot to unveil about the plot – it is all in the description. Author and main character tell her stories from three different prisons she worked and still working. Some stories are sad, violent, funny or even heartbreaking.
🍁
One thing I enjoyed while reading this book is how neutral the author is. She does not say that all people in the system are totally bad or perfectly good. Neither that the whole prison system wholly wrong nor right. It is just… what it is. And how people deal with it. For some of them, it won’t be the first or last trip in and out.
🍁
Would recommend if you are interested in prison life, even harder scenes are pretty mild, so even if you don’t have the stomach for violence, you should be able to take it in.

QOTD: Do you like reading memoirs? 😊

  1. I’ve recently become hooked on medical memoirs (after This is going to hurt by Adam Kay! ) so this sounds like a book for me!

  2. Nicely done review, and am I the only one that appreciated the autumn leaf separators vs using periods? I have not read any memoirs, other than books by Carl Sagan that have a memoire-esque feel.

  3. Might I be so bold as to recommend “Stiff: The curious life of human cadavers” by Mary Roach. The title bellies the books tone I promise haha
