AD-Gifted | Exciting Times is a sharply written millennial fiction about self-discovery, dysfunctional relationships and life abroad.

Ava, a 20-something girl, is the main character in Exciting Times. She is originally from Dublin and currently teaches English to children in Hong Kong. There she meets a wealthy banker named Julian, the two of them very soon starts having sex, and Ava moves in with him, but there is no question of a relationship. When Julian leaves for London for a few months, Ava meets Edith and feelings for her soon starts a complicated love triangle.

On the surface, the story is quite simple. Ava is designed to be shown as a relatable millennial character. She is intelligent, self-aware and at times pretty ignorant. She is constantly worried about other people’s opinions of her so much that she sabotages her relationships. I enjoyed the discussions throughout the book, but overall it didn’t do anything groundbreaking for me.

The book is filled to the brim with razor-sharp quotes and commentaries around capitalism, gender roles and modern dating. Sometimes, it may feel that the book is trying too hard, but you have to admit that the writing style of Naoise Dolan is fantastic.

If you enjoy reading about modern dating – you may want to give this book a go!
