“A real choice doesn’t have conditions. A real choice is free.”
🌹
A Woman Is No Man is a heartbreaking story about three generations of Palestinian-American women in a single-family and the story about women who have been oppressed by their culture, traditions and family.
🌹
This was not a simple read. The book deals with everything: immigration, displacement, mental illness, patriarchy in all its horror. But at the same time it was gripping and exceptionally well told. We both loved how the author defined what it means to be a woman when your choice is ripped out from you.
🌹
It was one of the most disturbing and saddening books we have read in a while. It felt like an honour reading this incredible and tragic story. We both felt empathy for each of these female characters and there were times spent almost crying or punched in the gut, and other times, we could not put the book down. Without revealing any spoilers, the ending is shocking and a sad piece of art.
🌹
The book talks a lot about having or giving voice, and we could not agree more. To make changes takes not one voice but all the voices.
🌹
Depressing yet hopeful, this is an amazing story to read.
